2005 Statistics for rec.sport.unicycling

Like in previous years, I have done some silly statistics on the message traffic that has gone on in the newsgroup rec.sport.unicycling (which should mirror the web-based forum Rec.Sport.Unicycling and the corresponding mailing list). So, as some will be relieved to know, any posts on other forums such as Just Conversation don't count for this statistics page. Hey guys and girls, your posting habits are revealed without mercy...

Overall newsgroup activity level

In 2005, a total of 63456  messages were posted to Rec.Sport.Unicycling, by a total of 1447 posters. The average number of posts per day was 174, up from 141 last year. On the record day of 2 June we had to digest a mere 294 posts! OTOH, the lowest post count on a single day was 73, occurring on 12 February and again on 11 March. 

 

In the picture above, the number of posts has been smoothed using a running average (with a seven-day window to avoid any effect of weekly trends). 

 

Posts per weekday

This picture is remarkably similar to last year's. Like previous years, on Saturdays and Sundays less messages get posted, while right after the weekend there are slightly more posts. Riding in the weekend and reporting afterwards? 

 

Top 100 posters (based on message count)

The table below gives the 100 most prolific posters. The order has been based firstly on the number of posts during the year, secondly (if that was inconclusive) on the average number of lines per post, and thirdly on the (low) number of lines quoted, i.e. more original content. 

The meaning of the other columns is as follows, taking forrestunifreak as an example: 

  • forrestunifreak posted 1407 times in 2005, 
  • the text body of his posts consisted of 23 lines on average, 
  • of which 14.1% was quoted from previous messages. 
  • 2.2% of all the posts in the group were from forrestunifreak, 
  • with which he occupied 2.0% of the total number of bytes posted in 2005. 
  • Finally, 1.77% of the newsgroup posts in January were posted by forrestunifreak, 0.31% in February, etc.

Top 10 posters (based on message count)

Here's the activity log of the ten people who between themselves posted about 20% of all of the 2005 posts. That's one in five!

 

 Top 20 subjects

The posts in 2005 were devoted to a total of 5168 threads, or rather subjects since a post that hasn't been replied to might technically not be called a thread (and there were 380 of such single posts). In the table you can see the longest 20 threads/subjects. A few of those were (and still are) specifically intended to be long-running, or to invite a lot of entries, such as numbers 1, 2, 3, 7, 13, 14 and 19. Some others just happened to evoke a lot of discussion, such as tylercox's On One Wheel scans, and of course helmet discussions. We had two flaming helmet debates last year, hilarious (I think) but highly combustible mixtures of serious thought, word fights and unshakable positions. Some of the contesters seem to have a very hard head!

A new trend in 2005 was long threads devoted to videos (numbers 6, 11, 12, 18). Besides, two "best picture" threads made it to the top-20, one started on 1 January and aiming at 2004 photos, and one started towards the end of the year. Fewer than in previous years in the top-20 were sort of get-to-know-each-other threads. And we have our two classics: the Uni Count thread (started in 2003) and Unicycle articles (but wait there's more...), which even started in 2002 and like last year occupies most bytes in rsu. These two classics have been in the top-10 for three years in a row now! 

The table has firstly been sorted to number of posts, and secondly to sent bytes where inconclusive. How many threads do you remember? Clicking on a subject title takes you to the thread (on the forum).

 Share of posts from unicyclist.com (2001 u/i 2005!)

By far the most people who are active in Rec.Sport.Unicycling use the web-based interface of the forums on www.unicyclist.com. If everything works allright, then by means of an automatic two-way coupling, every message posted to the forums is relayed to the newsgroup and vice versa. (There is effectively a three-way coupling because there exists also an e-mail list which is coupled to the newsgroup.) 

The newsgroup was created in 1995, and the e-mail list predated that by a few years. The forums were only launched in March of 2001. Initially, they were used by just a few people, until Gilby actually included something other than the forums on the site (July 2001) and switched the free e-mail service over to his own server (end of August 2001). Since then the largest increase in activity has happened and it's continuing to grow. 

Sidenote: while the web address of Gilby's site does include 'www', the posts made on the forum are relayed to the newsgroup with the string 'http://Unicyclist.com' in the Organization: header. In the first few months of its existence it has been 'http://www.unicyclist.com' which was later dropped but somehow briefly reappeared in September 2001.

It would be interesting to further split the number of posts into e-mail list and Usenet news. My data harvesting tools give me information on the software that people use to post (you see, not much escapes me :-)). It's a long list and I recognise quite some e-mail programs but I don't think that that means that they post via e-mail. If a post is originating from the mailing list, it is indicated in the post headers but I haven't found a feasible way yet to process that information.

By the end of 2005, about 97.5% of all posts originated from the forum, and if anything, the percentage is still rising. However, I for one am not converted yet - please note that if I had not used a Usenet newsreader I could not have made this stats page in the first place.

Creative namegiving...

I don't know what it is with unicyclists... they are so creative! To give just a few examples, among the posters in 2005, there were

  • 32 cycle
  • 10 cyclist
  • 55 man
  • 14 boy
  • 0 woman
  • 2 girl
  • 3 baby

Also, many posters use their first name as their poster's handle, or (more often) as part of it. In the little table below, I have subtracted the cases where the string did occur but didn't seem to be a first name. Those which occurred 5 times or more are:

  • mike (10 times)
  • john (9 times)
  • steve (8 times)
  • david (7 times)
  • max (7 times)
  • tom (6 times) (refuting the once popular opinion that Tom is the commonest name for unicyclists)

(I may have forgotten to check on a particular first name. Requests will be considered, also for the 'random string' table above.)

Finally (at least before the closing remarks), this year for the first time, I'll include a complete list of posters. In between brackets after their name first their position in the top-1447, then the number of posts made in 2005. So now everyone can find him(her)self back!

Disclaimers and how-I-did-it

All of these statistics are based on posts (made via whatever means) to rec.sport.unicycling that are visible on the newsgroup on Usenet. To view the newsgroup, I have relied on two news servers of my ISP  - but the servers may have missed some posts to Usenet.

I have used Agent 1.92/32.572 to save all messages. This year I have effectively made no effort to exclude spam ('t is a long story). Occasionally, messages showed up twice or more. In those cases, messages are double (triple etc.) counted.

The date assigned to a post is not trivial. AFAIK, each post is date/time-stamped by the poster's own computer at the time of sending. Agent does convert that date/time stamp to my time zone (Central European). I don't know how Day Light Saving time is accounted for. We do have DST here during the summer, but some posters may not.

I have generated raw statistics using QDNStatsV2 (RtS#2) by Brett O'Callaghan. QDNStats pretends to generate web-ready reports but I think they're still quite tedious. A real bug is that it can't handle really large volumes of posts - I have to do the whole year in several installments. Other than that it mostly works flawlessly.

QDNStats distinguishes posters by their names. Not so strange, most people do the same but QDNStats is very unforgiving. For instance, David_Stone and David Stone are regarded as different posters (who, when taken together, would have made it to the top-100). I noticed quite a few people whom I suspect posted under different names. I made no effort to correct this, partly because it would involve a lot of manual editing, and also how can I be sure that it indeed involves a single person? And it wouldn't be fair to do the lumping together for some, and not for some others. So, sorry for those who used various handles, I simply couldn't cope with it (other than this). HINT: If you would take pride in a high position in the top-100 for 2006, don't change your name! 

Finally, I used Excel to post-process the QDNStats results, Paint Shop Pro to polish the graphics, and FrontPage to generate the html code.
