2004 Statistics for rec.sport.unicycling

Deze pagina in het Nederlands

Like in previous years, I have done some silly statistics on the message traffic that has gone on in the newsgroup rec.sport.unicycling (which should mirror the web-based forum Rec.Sport.Unicycling and the corresponding mailing list). So, as some will be relieved to know, any posts on other forums such as Just Conversation don't count for this statistics page. Hey guys and girls, your posting habits are revealed without mercy...

Disclaimers and how-I-did-it are at the bottom of the page.

Overall newsgroup activity level

In 2004, a total of 51491 messages were posted to Rec.Sport.Unicycling, by a total of 1235 posters. The average number of posts per day was 141, up from 113 last year. On the record day of 29 December we had to digest a mere 279 posts (incidentally exactly the same as last year)! Are we having fun yet?

In the picture above, the number of posts has been smoothed using a running average (with a one-week window to avoid any effect of weekly trends).

The two dips in August and September are caused by the Forum <=> Usenet coupling having been a bit shaky in that period, which has caused fewer messages to appear on the newsgroup than were actually posted on the forum.

Posts per weekday

Like previous years, on Saturdays and Sundays less messages get posted, while right after the weekend there are slightly more posts. Riding in the weekend and reporting afterwards?

Top 100 posters (based on message count)

The table below gives the 100 most prolific posters. The order has been based firstly on the number of posts during the year, secondly (if that was inconclusive) on the average number of lines per post, and thirdly on the (low) number of lines quoted, i.e. more original content.

The meaning of the other columns is as follows, taking john_childs as an example: john_childs posted 1321 times in 2004, the text body of his posts consisted of 29 lines on average, of which 15.9% was quoted from previous messages. 2.6% of all the posts in the group were from john_childs, with which he occupied 3.9% of the total number of bytes posted in 2004. Finally, 3.25% of the newsgroup posts in January were posted by john_childs, 2.67% in February, etc.

Top 10 posters (based on message count)

All of the top-10 posters were active throughout the year. Well, Sofa ditched his name in August and went on to post as Brian MacKenzie. As justified below, those names count separately in my processing. Counted together, his posts would have gotten him in third position!

Towards the end of the year, a couple of new posters came on strong but they didn't quite make it to the top-10, and I felt that the picture would suffer from more data. I say, keep an eye on total uni for a shining appearance in the 2005 stats page if there is going to be one :-) But hey, I was quite wrong in last year's forecast.

Here's the activity log of the ten people who between themselves posted about 17% of all the 2004 posts:

 Top 20 subjects

The posts in 2004 were devoted to a total of 4813 threads, or rather subjects since a post that hasn't been replied to might technically not be called a thread (and there were 461 of such single posts). In the table you can see the longest 20 threads/subjects. A few of those were (and still are) specifically intended to be long-running, or to invite a lot of entries, the others just provoked a lot of discussion.

A new trend in 2004 was l-o-o-o-ng threads for large events, in which all the attendants were scored, and other logistics managed. Fewer than last year in the top-20 were sort of get-to-know-each-other threads. The Uni Count thread is still number one with 0.47% of all posts, exactly the same as in 2003! Another classic is Unicycle articles (but wait there's more...), which like last year occupies most bytes in rsu.

The subjects in the table have firstly been sorted to number of posts, and secondly to sent bytes where inconclusive. How many do you remember? Clicking on a subject title takes you to the thread (on the forum).

The Buc 11 thread (#5) was in fact two separate threads on the forum, but on the newsgroup threads with exactly the same title are always merged into one. tom_edmonds started the first one, north got more replies. The numbers shown are for the combined thread (as on usenet).

 Share of posts from unicyclist.com (2001 u/i 2004!)

By far the most people who are active in Rec.Sport.Unicycling use the web-based interface of the forums on www.unicyclist.com. If everything works allright, then by means of an automatic two-way coupling, every message posted to the forums is relayed to the newsgroup and vice versa. (There is effectively a three-way coupling because there exists also an e-mail list which is coupled to the newsgroup.)

The newsgroup was created in 1995, and the email list predated that by a few years. The forums were only launched in March of 2001. Initially, they were used by just a few people, until Gilby actually included something other than the forums on the site (July 2001) and switched the free email service over to his own server (end of August 2001). Since then the largest increase in activity has happened and it's continuing to grow.

Uninteresting sidenote: while the web address of Gilby's site does include 'www', the posts made on the forum are relayed to the newsgroup with the string 'http://Unicyclist.com' in the Organization: header. In the first few months of its existence it has been 'http://www.unicyclist.com' which was later dropped but somehow briefly reappeared in September 2001.

It would be interesting to further split the number of posts into e-mail list and Usenet news. My data harvesting tools give me information on the software that people use to post (you see, not much escapes me :-)). It's a long list and I recognise quite some e-mail programs but I don't think that that means that they post via e-mail. If a post is originating from the mailing list, it is indicated in the post headers but I haven't found a feasible way yet to process that information.

By the end of 2004, over 95% of all posts originated from the forum. However, I for one am not converted yet - please note that if I had not used a Usenet newsreader I could not have made this stats page in the first place.

And here, if anyone is interested, is the same data but in absolute numbers rather than percentages:

Creative namegiving...

I don't know what it is with unicyclists... they are so creative! Just to illustrate the point, this is an alphabetic list of all 133 (that's one hundred and thirty three!) posters that have 'uni' in their name (between brackets their position in the overall top-1235 of posters):

Disclaimers and how-I-did-it

All of these statistics are based on posts (made via whatever means) to rec.sport.unicycling that are visible on the newsgroup on Usenet. To view the newsgroup, I have relied on the news server of my ISP as well as on a long-retention (but non-posting) free news server  - but the servers may have missed some posts to Usenet. More importantly, there have been periods in 2004 that few posts from the forum made it to Usenet. Obviously, such missing posts cannot contribute to these stats.

I have used Free Agent 1.21/32 to view and save all messages, trying to exclude spam while including replies of faithful posters to spam. However, some spam may have been saved and counted in, while perhaps some genuine posts were not recognised as such and may have been excluded. Occasionally, messages showed up twice or more. In those cases, messages are double (triple etc.) counted.

The date assigned to a post is not trivial. AFAIK, each post is date/time-stamped by the poster's own computer at the time of sending. Free Agent does convert that date/time stamp to my time zone (Central European). I don't know how Day Light Saving time is accounted for. We do have DST here during the summer, but some posters may not.

I have generated raw statistics using QDNStatsV2 (RtS#2) by Brett O'Callaghan. QDNStats pretends to generate web-ready reports but I think they're still quite tedious. A real bug is that it can't handle really large volumes of posts - I have to do the whole year in several installments. Other than that it mostly works flawlessly.

QDNStats distinguishes posters by their names. Not so strange, most people do the same but QDNStats is very unforgiving. For instance, "sarah.miller" and "Sarah Miller" are counted as two different posters (of which only one made it to the top-100). I noticed quite a few people whom I suspect posted under different names. I made no effort to correct this, partly because it would involve a lot of manual editing, and also how can I be sure that it indeed involves a single person? And it wouldn't be fair to do the lumping together for some, and not for some others. So, sorry for those who used various handles, I simply couldn't cope with it (other than this).

Finally, I used Excel to post-process the QDNStats results, Paint Shop Pro to polish the graphics, and FrontPage to generate the html code.
