2003 Statistics for rec.sport.unicycling

Deze pagina in het Nederlands

Like previous years, I have done some silly statistics on the message traffic that has gone on in the newsgroup rec.sport.unicycling (which should mirror the web-based forum Rec.Sport.Unicycling and the corresponding mailing list). So, as some will be relieved to know, any posts on other forums such as Just Conversation don't count for this statistics page. Here are some results, including a new category. Hey guys and girls, your posting habits are revealed without mercy...

Disclaimers and how-I-did-it are at the bottom of the page.

Overall newsgroup activity level

In 2003, a total of 41338 messages were posted to Rec.Sport.Unicycling, by a total of 870 posters. The average number of posts per day was 113, up from 87 last year. On the record day of 1 December we had to digest a mere 279 posts! Are we having fun yet?

On the bright side (if I may phrase that as an opinion), the trend of ever increasing traffic seems to have been curbed this year. This may partly be because many people have taken refuge in Just Conversation for their non-uni-related posts, which indeed is exactly what JC is for. It might also be that the decrease isn't real, just that the Forum <=> Usenet coupling which has been a bit shaky over the year, has caused me to receive fewer messages than were actually posted. In spite of my earlier voiced opinion, I think that would be sad.

In the picture above, the number of posts has been smoothed using a running average (with a one-week window to avoid any effect of weekly trends).

The two dips around end of July and first half of August may be too low due to my missing some posts while being on holiday (I was too late this time to make manual corrections based on another source).

Posts per weekday

Like previous years, on Saturdays and Sundays less messages get posted, while right after the weekend there are more posts. Riding in the weekend and reporting afterwards?

Top 100 posters (based on message count)

The table below gives the 100 most prolific posters. The order has been based firstly on the number of posts during the year, secondly (if that was inconclusive) on the average number of lines per post, and thirdly on the (low) number of lines quoted, i.e. more original content.

The meaning of the other columns is as follows, taking jagur as an example: jagur posted 1390 times in 2003, the text body of his posts consisted of 21 lines on average, of which 21.4% was quoted from previous messages. 3.4% of all the posts in the group were from jagur, with which he occupied 2.9% of the total number of bytes posted in 2003. Finally, 3.41% of the newsgroup posts in January were posted by jagur, 3.76% in February, etc.

Top 10 posters (based on message count)

All of the top-10 posters were active throughout the year. Towards the end of the year, a couple of new posters came on strong but they didn't quite make it to the top-10, and I felt that the picture would suffer from more data. I say, keep an eye on Joona from Finland for a shining appearance in the 2004 stats page if there is going to be one :-)

Here's the activity log of the ten people who between themselves posted over 25% of all the 2003 posts:

But who gave us most to read?

Some people are notorious for posting looooong messages. In the top-100 table you can see their high numbers for 'avg msg lines', i.e. their Average Number of Lines per Message. Mikefule with his ride accounts comes to mind, or JJuggle unearthing and posting publications that mention the word 'unicycle' or one of its derivations. In the table below I've made a top-10 of people based on how much they give us to read, expressed as the number of characters (excluding quoted lines).

 Top 20 subjects

The posts in 2003 were devoted to a total of 4400 threads, or rather subjects since a post that hasn't been replied to might technically not be called a thread (and there were 414 of such single posts). In the table you can see the longest 20 threads/subjects. A few of those were (and still are) specifically intended to be long-running, or to invite a lot of entries, the others just provoked a lot of discussion. Strikingly, quite a few were sort of get-to-know-each-other threads, they seem to serve the purpose of tying us together as a group.

The subjects in the table have firstly been sorted to number of posts, and secondly to sent bytes where inconclusive. How many do you remember? Clicking on a subject title takes you to the thread (on the forum).

 Share of posts from unicyclist.com (2001 u/i 2003!)

By far the most people who are active in Rec.Sport.Unicycling use the web-based interface of the forums on www.unicyclist.com. By means of an automatic two-way coupling, every message posted to the forums is relayed to the newsgroup and vice versa. (There is effectively a three-way coupling because there exists also an e-mail list which is coupled to the newsgroup.)

The forums have not always been there. They were launched in March of 2001. Initially, they were used by just a few people, until Gilby actually included something other than the forums on the site (July 2001) and switched the free email service over to his own server (end of August 2001). Since then the largest increase in activity has happened and it's continuing to grow.

Uninteresting sidenote: while the web address of Gilby's site does include 'www', the posts made on the forum are relayed to the newsgroup with the string 'http://Unicyclist.com' in the Organization: header. In the first few months of its existence it has been 'http://www.unicyclist.com' which was later dropped but somehow briefly reappeared in September 2001.

It would be interesting to further split the number of posts into e-mail list and Usenet news. I do have information on the software that people use to post (you see, not much escapes me :-)). It's a long list and I recognise quite some e-mail programs but I don't think that that means that they post via e-mail. If a post is originating from the mailing list, it is indicated in the post headers but I haven't found a feasible way yet to process that information. Maybe next year??

By the end of 2003, well over 90% of all posts originated from the forum. However, I for one am not converted yet - please note that if I had not used a Usenet newsreader I could not have made this stats page in the first place.

And here, if anyone is interested, is the same data but in absolute numbers rather than percentages:

Disclaimers and how-I-did-it

I have relied on the news server of my ISP as well as on a long-retention (but non-posting) free news server to view the newsgroup - but the servers may have missed some posts.

I have used Free Agent 1.21/32 to view and save all messages, trying to exclude spam while including replies of faithful posters to spam. However, some spam may have been saved and counted in, while some genuine posts may have been excluded.

Occasionally, messages show up twice or more. In those cases, messages are double (triple etc.) counted.

The date assigned to a post is not trivial. AFAIK, each post is date/time-stamped by the poster's own computer at the time of sending. Free Agent does convert that date/time stamp to my time zone (Central European). I don't know how Day Light Saving time is accounted for. We do have DST here during the summer, but some posters may not.

I have generated raw statistics using QDNStatsV2 (RtS#2) by Brett O'Callaghan. QDNStats pretends to generate web-ready reports but I think they're still quite tedious. A real bug is that it can't handle really large volumes of posts - I have to do the whole year in several installments. Other than that it mostly works flawlessly.

QDNStats distinguishes posters by their names. Not so strange, most people do the same but QDNStats is very unforgiving. For instance, "Roger at Unicycle.com", "rogeratunicycledotcom", "Roger Davies" and "rdavies21" are counted as four different posters (of which only one made it to the top-100). I noticed dozens of people whom I suspect posted under different names. Sometimes it is their own fault (e.g. posting from work under a different name - I won't name people), sometimes is is the forum's fault, e.g. when "rhysling" posted as "rhysling.k6l6m@timelimit.unicyclist.com". I made no effort to correct this, partly because it would involve a lot of manual editing, and also how can I be sure that it indeed involves a single person? I mean, "Paul Selwood" is almost certainly "paul.selwood", but does "Sarah" equate to "Sarah Miller"? And maybe "paul@vimes.spamless.u-net.com" completes their ménage à cinq? Is "jagur thomas" the alter ego of our number one poster "jagur"? I think he is, and I have it from a trusted source that he is also "forget_your_life" but it isn't obvious from looking at the names. So, sorry for those who used various handles, I simply couldn't cope with it (other than this).

Finally, I used Excel to post-process the QDNStats results, Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop to polish the graphics, and FrontPage to generate the html code.
